What Is a QR Code?

0:00 / 0:00

QR stands for Quick Response. It was invented in 1994 at Denso Wave in Japan to track car parts on the factory floor, because a barcode could not hold enough.

The three big squares in the corners tell your camera where the code is and which way is up. Extra repair data built into the pattern means a code still scans when part of it is scratched or covered by a logo.

Before you open a link from a QR code, check where it goes. A sticker over a real code is an easy trick.

You scanned your ticket just to see what happens. Fair enough. That square is a QR code, and it isn't a picture, it's writing: each tiny square is dark or light, a yes or a no, and together they spell out the message, across and down, not in one line like a barcode. Yours holds one short code, and at the door, that's your way in.
