Mid-century realist painting style explainer videos
Hard morning light moving slowly across quiet rooms and streets. Brief it in one sentence and get a narrated, animated explainer film in the Quiet American realism style, scored and voiced, in about 15 minutes.

What it looks like, and when to use it.
Flat walls, plain rooms and empty streets, crossed by hard-edged patches of morning sun. Quiet American realism is drawn in code: every surface has a shadow colour and a lit colour, and the light itself is the motion, sliding slowly from one thing to the next. It is calm, thoughtful and a little lonely, for stories about cities, work and everyday life.
Best for
- Cities, work and daily routines
- Reflective stories and essays
- History of 20th-century America
Try a brief like
- “Why so many people feel lonely in big cities”
- “How the 40-hour work week began”
- “What a city sounds like at 6 a.m.”
The art direction the director follows.
Every style is a full art direction, not a filter: its own palette, type, motion and music. This is the brief the director works from for Quiet American realism.
- Look
- Drawn in code, no generated images: mid-century American realism. Simple flat planes of wall, floor, window and building, a few still figures, and hard-edged sunlight. Every surface exists twice: in a cool shadow colour (sage-green wall, dark floor) and a warm lit colour (butter-yellow wall, honey floor). Sharp-edged patches of sun cut the lit version into the shadow one. Faint vertical brush drag on flat walls, red brick and dark window holes across the street, few details, and a feeling of stillness and solitude.
- Motion
- Almost still: the light is the motion. Sun patches slide slowly across walls and floors, a light edge sweeps over a face or an object to reveal it, dust floats only inside the beam, a blind cord sways, small life goes on outside (a turning barber pole, steam). Cuts are hard; a scene change is a hard-edged band of sunlight sweeping across the frame.
- Music
- Sparse and reflective: solo piano or muted trumpet, soft upright bass, a lonely late-night jazz feel with long silences.
- Type
- Plain mid-century signage: a condensed sans or a simple serif in the wall's shadow or lit colour, as if painted on a shop window or a sign.
